(AP) - The massive storm that started out as Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast and morphed into a huge and problematic system, putting more than 7.5 million homes and businesses in the dark and causing at least 18 deaths. Here's a snapshot of what is happening, state by state.

Below are organizations bringing relief efforts and the best way we can play our part to help:

RED CROSS- Those who want to help are encouraged to donate money to the Red Cross, as the need for sheltering of displaced residents will be high until power can be restored to affected areas. A spokesman for the Springfield Red Cross says disaster volunteer teams have contracts with companies and know how to organize food and water distribution. Donations can be made via their site HERE or toll free at (866) 206-0256

CONVOY OF HOPE -Those wishing to make a contribution to the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts can make a secure online contribution at www.convoyofhope.org or, to place a $10 donation on your cellular bill, text the word CONVOY to 50555. Standard text and data rates apply

THE SALVATION ARMY USA: The Salvation Army is prepared for a long-term disaster response and recovery operation following the mass destruction and power outages left by Sandy. In New York City, officials from the Office of Emergency Management have appointed The Salvation Army as the lead agency for the City's Food Access Plan, to coordinate feeding at city shelters. Feeding has already begun in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, and mobile canteen units will deploy to the areas of greatest need as damage is assessed in the coming days.
