One Hit Wonder Wednesday: Remember I Want Candy?

Yup one of those songs that gets stuck in your head in a record setting 5 seconds or less!  But what ever happend to the band, Bow Wow Wow? Did they fall apart after 'I Want Candy'? Did they reincarnate as a rapper (Lil Bow Wow)?

Well they did suffer some turbulence in the band after the song took off and they embarked on an intense tour.  The guys in the group decided to put out their singer, Annabella Lwin, and form another group, Chiefs of Relief among other projects.  And Annabella then focused on a solo career. Some of the members broke off and focused on other projects such as writing novels, record producing, and scoring films.  Sadly, the band has lost one of its members to diabetes, Matthew Ashman age 35.

The band reunited in the mid 90s for a tour and have released a few songs on occasion, but no other studio albums since the 80s.  Today the band still tours and for more Bow Wow Wow-ness, here's their website: http://www.bowwowwow.org/xold/index.html

Their most recent recording was a cover of the Smiths song, "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish" in 1997 which was suposedly intended for a Smiths tribute album. Have a listen below!

One Hit Wonder Wednesday: Remember Black Velvet?

What a fantastic voice and song! What happened to Alannah Myles?!

I truly love finding out what ever happened to the acts who put out some of our favorite songs - especially if the act managed to make such an enormous impact with only one song!  There's no doubt the familiarity and impact "Black Velvet" has made on music.  We love the song's story of the King of Rock & Roll that's interpreted so perfectly by Canadian singer, Alannah Myles.  So why on earth is "Black Velvet" the only song we remember from Alannah?  Did she quit music?  Did she become a Nascar driver?  None of the above! Turns out she's still making music - in fact she's not really a one hit wonder to anyone except here in the US.  She's maintained a very successful career overseas.  Find out what she's been up to, her future plans, the backstory of "Black Velvet", and more by clicking the interview podcast links below - dig in! ~Rachael

Ok, I feel like a bad girlfriend.  It's been my little assignment for about 2 weeks to come up with some movies for the boyfriend and I to watch.  I'm stalling because everytime I think of a movie-it's a chick flick!  He's clearly straight and not gonna dig a chick flick...

What's some good movies for a date night?

One Hit Wonder Wednesday: What happened to Gary Numan?

You remember the song, but what happened to Gary Numan after 'Cars'?

Gary actually never stopped making music!  Well, he did try to retire in the early 80s after a series of 'farewell' concerts...but that didn't last.  Gary was back in the studio and over the years has experimented in various styles of music on his albums, from jazz to electronic to rock and more.  Gary has gone on to release about 17 albums since 'Cars' came out.  His latest album Dead Son Rising just came out last year and he plans to release a new album, Splinter, later this year or early next .  So how does he sound now? Have a listen below! More about Gary here: http://www.numan.co.uk/

Under the Covers: Who Sang You Keep Me Hangin On first?

Kim Wilde rocked her version of the song, but who sang it first?

The Supremes came out with the first version and took it to number 1 in the mid 60's.  Then Kim blew the dust off the song and blew us away with her version in 1986.  But, Kim Wilde isn't the only musician in love with the song, see who else has covered it too. I didn't know Vanilla Fudge did!

One Hit Wonder Wednesday: What happened to Thomas Dolby?

One Hit Wonder Wednesday: What happened to Thomas Dolby?

Ah yeah who can forget this catchy little ditty about...uh we're not sure?  Thomas wasn't exactly sure either!  He once told Creem magazine "I think it’s the most meaningless song I’ve ever written [...] maybe I should let loose and make a record that was basically nonsense like everything else on the charts. And it’s just a sad reflection on the state of things that it was successful.”  Oh ok, makes sense right? So what's Thomas been up to since this song?  He's actuallly stayed pretty busy releasing music through most of the 80s into the early 90s.  He also did a lot of behind the scenes work for other musicians either producing or playing keyboard for people like Joni Mitchell and George Clinton.  He even wrote songs for films and video games!  And did some acting himself in the film, Rockula before taking a brief hiatus from entertainment.

Thomas can't stay away from music too long though - he just released a new album last October, A Map of the Floating City, and below is a song from the album.  What do you think of mad scientist Thomas Dolby vs. Thomas Dolby now?

National Record Store Day

http://www.recordstoreday.com/

When I heard that tomorrow was Record Store Day- I thought- wow - they still exist?

Yes they do and they are becoming more popular again! In fact, a lot of new artists are now releasing their new music on vinyl- and get this- they vinyl now costs more than the cd! The demand is so high they can command that! If you haven't taken an hour or so to look through albums in a while, it is a trip down memory lane and a fun way to kill an hour too. If you're like me, and sold your extinct turntable in a garage sale for $5, then you are in luck. You can still get them- usually around $25 for a vintage one, but now, you can get one that has a USB port to "burn" your albums onto a Cd or on your computer! So you can finally get those albums out of the basement and enjoy them again!

What are your top 5 favorite albums that you listened to growing up? It's not an easy list, but here's what I remember listening to the most:

  1. Journey - Infinity
  2. Journey- Escape
  3. Fleetwood Mac- Rumours
  4. Cyndey Lauper- Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
  5. Led Zep- IV

How about you? What were your favorite albums?

Under the Covers: Who sang Hard to Handle first?

We've probably heard SEVERAL versions of 'Hard To Handle' but who sang it first??

Otis Redding sang it first!  It was released in 1968 after he'd passed away the year before. Otis' version peaked at 38 on the R&B chart.  But the Black Crowes were big Otis fans and brought the song back in 1990 and it reached number 1 on the Album Rock chart.  Check out their version and some other versions below...which is your favorite?

One Hit Wonder Wednesday: What Ever Happened to Nazareth?

We love their version of "Love Hurts", but what happened to Nazareth?

After "Love Hurts", Nazareth had several lineup changes, however; original lead singer Dan McCafferty and bassist Dan Agnew still remain with the band to this day.  After the success of their album, Hair of the Dog, with "Love Hurts" Nazareth continued working and have released 16 albums since!  The band maintained popularity more so in Europe...why is that? Why do some of our favorite acts gain their popularity here then have to continue their careers over seas?? Well, the band does originate from Scotland, but still! Anyway, wanna hear what Nazareth sounds like now? Have a listen to 'Big Dog's Gonna Howl' from their latest album, Big Dogz released just last year....
