Bill In Missouri Legislature Would Eliminate Property Taxes For Senior Citizens

A state lawmaker plans to introduce a bill this year that would do away with property taxes for senior citizens.

It would reduce money for public schools statewide between 75 and 300 million dollars.

Branson School Superintendent Brad Swofford tells Missourinet he thinks the legislation could see opposition from educators, including from his district.

Jim Jones, the superintendent of the Blair Oaks Schools in mid-Missouri says the proposal would force his district to make cuts to programs.

The measure from Representative Bill Kidd has been criticized because it could reduce funding to public schools statewide by up to 300 million dollars.

Kidd thinks the impact it would have on school funding is insignificant compared to the financial relief it would bring to senior homeowners.
