Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt wants to boost penalties against carjacking suspects.
In 2018, St. Louis had more than 300 carjackings reported – a figure Schmitt calls near epidemic levels.
Under the measures, a carjacking suspect convicted of using a weapon to commit the offense could be sentenced to ten years to life in prison.
Prosecutors could also charge the criminals with vehicle hijacking, instead the typical robbery charge.
