Springfield Man Charged With Murder and Vehicle Theft

A man from Springfield is charged with second-degree murder, theft of a vehicle, and 9 other crimes and misdemeanors after he stole a Budget box truck earlier this month and drove recklessly through the city.

Shannon J. Shaffer, 27, was on probation after pleading guilty to four other felonies involving driving a stolen vehicle or driving without a license. Officers report that he stole a Budget truck on the 18th of July, crashed into two other vehicles and killed one man before running into another car and causing severe injuries. Officers say that Shaffer eventually ran into a street light, causing $10,000 worth of damages before fleeing the scene.

Officers arrested Shaffer on Friday after tracking a vehicle associated with the theft of the Budget box truck. The Greene County Prosecutor has requested that Shaffer be held without bond.
