Springfield City Utilities is adding on to its fiber optic network, spending $120 million dollars as part of a four-year expansion project.

The network will be available to lease to private broadband providers.

SpringNet, a division of City Utilities, provides internal communications to the utility and local municipal government facilities over fiber optic circuits.

CenturyLink has signed on as the first customer.

It should be able to provide service by the spring of 2020.

CU says no customer rate increases will pay for the expansion.
