A man from Springfield has pleaded guilty on charges from a drive-by shooting that caused the death of Zachary Zumwalt in November of 2017.
Richard A. Gaines entered the plea after his charges were amended to unlawful use of a weapon – drive-by shooting causing the death of another and armed criminal action.
Prosecutors say Gaines and a woman drove away from a McDonalds on West Kearney after being denied service and as they left the restaurant, Gaines leaned out a window and fired several shots towards the McDonalds.
While those shots were being fired, Zachary Zumwalt and his girlfriend were in a car parked next to the McDonalds. One of the shots went into Zumwalt’s car, grazing his grazing a woman in his car and killing him.
Gaines was sentenced 30 years for shooting and 15 years for the armed criminal action charge.
