The first positive case of Coronavirus (COVID-19) has been found in Missouri.

The patient is a young woman in her twenties from St. Louis County. The patient recently traveled to Italy and is now in isolation with family who are also in isolation.

Local health department officials are identifying close contacts to monitor symptoms and contain the spread of the illness.

Governor Parson expressed his confidence in the Department of Health and Senior Services and the St. Louis County Public Health Department in a press conference on Saturday.

The St. Louis County Executive Sam Page says St. Louis County is prepared for the challenge.

The St. Louis County Public Health Department is working with State and Federal authorities to keep as close a handle on the virus situation as it can and to identify and respond to new cases quickly.

The recent case is known as a “presumptive positive” and means that it is being treated as a real case of infection prior to receiving confirmation from the CDC.

Senator Roy Blunt issued a press release following the press conference, saying that “While Missourians will understandably be concerned about today’s announcement there is no need to panic.”

The senator added that the President signed a bill into law on Friday giving around 9.9 million dollars in funds to Missouri to support response efforts.

He added that he will “remain in touch with Governor Parson, Dr. Page, and local officials to ensure they have what they need to respond.”
