Springfield City Council Considers Body Cameras For Police Officers

By early 2021, Springfield police officers may be wearing body cameras.

City council members are considering investing more than $600,000 to buy the devices for the entire force.

It would cost around $200,000 per year to keep the cameras running.

Chief Paul Williams says it’s another tool in figuring out what happens when there’s an interaction between an officer and a member of the community.

Williams says he’s been asking for cameras to become part of his officers’ uniforms for years.

The city is considering using the pothole fund to pay for the cameras, but it would take months to write policies and get all officers trained on how to use the devices.
