Joplin City Council Says Yes To Mandatory Masking

Just two weeks after turning down an ordinance requiring people to wear face coverings in public, the Joplin City Council has voted 6-3 in favor of masking.

Council members heard from local hospitals and doctors treating COVID-19 patients and several hours of public comment during Wednesday’s meeting.

The Joplin Globe reports the president of Mercy Hospital says we’ve seen a huge rise in cases since council voted down a similar ordinance by a 5-4 vote.

The ordinance applies to anyone six years or older and requires face coverings to be worn inside businesses or public buildings. It also requires masks be worn outdoors when social distancing is not possible and when there are more than ten people gathered who aren’t family members.
