Springfield Police, DEA Investigate Officer Involved Fatal Shooting

Police in Springfield say on Monday afternoon, a Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration was involved in an officer-involved shooting at 1827 S. Maryland.

The suspect died on-scene.

Authorities identified the man as Caleb J. Slay, a 25-year-old male from Springfield, Missouri.

The Springfield Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is currently investigating this incident.

The DEA’s Public Information Office in St. Louis released the following statement on the investigation Tuesday morning:

On Nov. 2, 2020, at approximately 3:28 p.m., Special Agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration St. Louis Division were involved in a shooting in the area of the 1800 block of South Maryland Avenue in Springfield, Mo.

Just prior to the shooting, DEA agents were conducting surveillance when they observed what they believed to be a violation of federal law. The agents approached an individual who they believed was involved in the violation. During the conversation between the agents and that individual, a second individual, later identified as Caleb Slay, approached the agents. Soon thereafter, a physical altercation between the agents and Slay occurred, which resulted in Slay being shot. Slay was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

Both agents were transported to the area hospital as a precaution and have since been released.
