Cox South Hospital in Springfield is adding an entire floor of new rooms to help with a growing number of COVID-19 cases.

Construction crews have been working 20 hour days building 36 rooms that can house as many as 72 extra beds in the west tower that was added back in 2015.

The hospital set a record over the weekend with more than 160 patients being treated for the coronavirus, with projections of more than 200 patients in the coming weeks.

When CoxHealth added the 343,000 square foot tower, the third, fourth and fifth floors were left empty to allow for future expansion.
