City Council Votes Down ShotSpotter Deal

Springfield City Council has voted unanimously against a plan to install a gunshot-detecting system in the city.

Council turned down a $420,000 dollar contract with ShotSpotter that claims to recognize gunshots and dispatch police without the need for anyone to call 911.

If it had been approved, the company would have installed sound sensors around the city in a three square mile area.

Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams made the proposal.

He says gun violence is his top concern.

Police wanted to use money already in the department’s budget to pay for the three-year contract.
