Nixa Special Election Set For November 2

Nixa Special Election Set For November 2

Nixa Special Election Set For November 2

Nixa voters will decide if Mayor Brian Steele will remain in office on November 2.

The special election comes after a petition was submitted in June to recall Mayor Steele had enough signatures.

If poll goers vote to remove Steele, the city council will select a temporarily mayor until an election is held in April 2022.

The election is expected to cost the city around $15,000.

Press Release:

Nixa, MO – On November 2nd, Nixa voters will be asked whether Mayor Brian Steele should be removed from office. If the recall measure is passed with a “yes” vote in November, Mayor Brian Steele would be removed from office upon certification of the election result. This would cause the council to select someone to serve as mayor temporarily, until an election can be held in April 2022 to elect a new mayor to serve the remainder of Steele’s 3-year term (currently set to end in April 2023).

This special election is required in accordance with Article 10 of Nixa’s Home Rule Charter regarding recall petitions. On June 28th, a recall petition was submitted by a petitioner’s committee for the recall of Mayor Steele. After review, the Petition was found to have 73 verified signatures from registered voters who reside inside the city (out of a total 97 signatures on the petition). The City’s Home Rule Charter requires that a recall petition be signed by a number of qualified voters equal to 10% of the total number of votes cast for the office during the last election. Since Mayor Steele was last re-elected to a third term in 2020 with fewer than 700 votes cast, the 73 verified signatures gathered satisfied the requirements as described in the charter.

On August 9, 2021, city council passed an ordinance which includes a budget amendment in the amount of $15,000.00 for anticipated costs for this special election.
