American Red Cross volunteers from Missouri are on the ground in Louisiana, helping victims of Hurricane Ida.
John Mathews from Columbia has been a Red Cross volunteer for 40 years.
He and another volunteer brought an emergency response vehicle to Baton Rouge.
He says teams are staging there, waiting for orders on where to go pick up food to take where its needed.
Depending on where he’s assigned, he’ll take food to people in shelters or neighborhoods damaged by the storm.
Mathews says if he goes into neighborhoods, he’ll usually take at least 300 meals into an area each day.
Mathews says mobile teams return to those neighborhoods at the same time every day, feeding hurricane victims, line workers, and everyone else who needs a meal.
The damage #HurricaneIda left behind in Louisiana and Mississippi is becoming clearer. Temps are high and more than 1M people are facing hurdles like no power or cell service, blocked roads, & damaged water systems.
