The Springfield Police Department has released its 2021 midyear crime report.
It shows an increase in Crimes Against Persons.
Crimes Against Property and Crimes Against Society saw decreases.
Overall, crime for the first six months of the year is down 1.4% compared to the same time last year.

The Springfield Police Department’s 2021 midyear crime report tracks and analyzes more than 50 types of crime within three categories, Crime Against Persons, Crimes Against Property and Crimes Against Society.
In this report, you will find a comparison of numbers from the same timeframe in 2020.
That comparison shows a 1% increase in Crimes Against Persons (+29 reports), a 2.4% decrease in Crimes Against Property (-187 reports) and a 0.6% decrease in Crimes Against Society (-166 reports). Overall, crime in Springfield between January and June of 2021 was down by 1.4% (-166 cases) compared to the same timeframe in 2020.
This is the first time the SPD has been able to compare year-to-year crime numbers since switching to a new system administered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), called the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS).
The implementation of NIBRS has allowed the SPD to give citizens a more detailed look at crime in our community than the previously used system.
The 2021 midyear crime report also features updated clearance rates from 2020. Clearance rates are fluid and change over time as investigations progress and eventually lead to prosecution.
The side-by-side comparison serves as an example of how clearance rates have and will continue to evolve.
“Through tracking and releasing crime data, we can give citizens a realistic snapshot of crime in our community. The information can then serve as a baseline for identifying successful strategies and recognizing areas where improvements can be made through community-wide participation in crime prevention,” said Police Chief Paul Williams.
