Parson Blames Media For Discovering Security Flaw In State Website

Governor Parson is blaming the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for discovering a flaw in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s website that exposed the Social Security numbers of more than 100,000 Missouri teachers, administrators and counselors.

The Post-Dispatch says a reporter found the vulnerability in the website’s HTML computer code, but held off on running the story until the state could fix the site.

The Department of Education says the personal information of at least three teachers was taken.

In a press conference Thursday, Parson says the reporter is a hacker and should be prosecuted.

“This individual is not a victim. They were acting against a state agency to compromise teacher’s personal information in an attempt to embarrass the state and sell headlines for their news outlet.”

Parson says the reporter and anyone who helped them will be prosecuted.

“We will not let this crime against Missouri teachers go unpunished. And we refuse to let them be a pawn in the news outlet’s political vendetta.”

Parson took no questions from the media.

An attorney for the Post-Dispatch says the reporter did not act with criminal or malicious intent.
